Projections from the federal government released this week indicate that the average basic monthly premium for Medicare drug plans will be approximately $30 in 2013, similar to this year when it averaged $29.67.
Actuaries from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services calculated the estimates based on bids from drug and health plans. Annual enrollment for Medicare takes place from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. Enrollees will be able to compare plans and their quality ratings and offerings.
In a news release, the Department of Health and Human Services touted benefits from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, including out-of-pocket savings. For the first half of 2012, more than 1 million Medicare beneficiaries saved an average of $629 on their prescription drugs.
