Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a spectrum of progressive,
potentially reversible, neuropsychiatric conditions due to acute
or chronic liver failure. A wide range of neuropsychiatric
symptoms may be present in patients with HE. These symptoms
can range from subtle disturbances in psychomotor function,
memory, reaction time, and attention, known as minimal
HE, and ultimately progress toward overt manifestations such
as loss of concentration, altered consciousness and behavior,
generalized motor disturbances, and coma (ie, overt HE).
